20th Century: Should we say girlfriend, still?

There was a time that we would say the word “girlfriend” when speaking to our girlfriends (a girl who is a friend, acquaintance, or associate) with no second thought about it.

Now days, when we say “girlfriend,” to another girl, if she is a lesbian she immediately assumes we want to date her. Has this happen to you?
